How to multiply dracaena?

In Latin, Dracaena means "female dragon". The name has reached us - dracaena or "dragon" as defined by V. Dahl in his dictionary. So similar to the palm plant, loved by many growers. Let's try to figure out how to propagate dracaena, for example, to share with a friend or simply to save a tree that no longer fits in your room.

Methods of breeding dracaena

Consider two ways of breeding dracaena:

  1. stem cuttings;
  2. top handle.

How to propagate dragon plant stem cuttings

The method is suitable in the case of an adult healthy plant with an elastic, strong stem.

  • Use a sharp knife to cut the stem into pieces from 5 to 20 cm long.
  • Cut must be strictly on the places of attachment of leaves on the stem (leaf scars).
  • Cuttings take root in soil soils, sand, vermiculite, mochsagnum.

Rooting options:

  1. Vertical: the lower part of the cutting is immersed in the substrate at a depth of 2-3 cm. If rooting in the soil - sprinkle the cutting around a layer of sand 5-7cm.
  2. Horizontal rooting: slightly push the cutting into the wet substrate in a horizontal position (stack the cuttings).
  • The cuttings root well in greenhouse conditions, when the temperature of the soil and air is + 20-24 degrees.

We multiply the dragon tree with a top handle

Using a sharp knife, cut off the top of the dracaena with leaves (15 centimeters long). In the case of dracaena, it doesnt matter much if this is a cut or a diagonal cut.

The main thing here is the absence of chipping on the stem, the cut should be smooth (because it is important that the knife is sharp). Otherwise, rotting cutting is possible.

It is necessary to get rid of the leaves at the base of the cutting (at the Bordered Dracena, the stem is already without leaves).

Rooting options:

  1. In water. Put the stalk - the tip in the water at room temperature. Water change as turbidity (once / twice a week). To prevent water from spoiling so quickly, add a crushed activated carbon tablet.
  2. Rooting in inert material: sand, perlite, vermiculite (see above).
