My Engagement Ring | Am I a Hypocrite?
Hate Your Engagement Ring? Here’s What to Do
Your boyfriend just proposed, and the ring isn’t really “you.” It actually happens more than you’d think, since only about one quarter of brides are involved in shopping for their ring (although many more drop subtle and not-so-subtle hints!). This is a tough situation, but you can probably get the ring you want (or be happy with the one you have) without being rude. Here are your options:
It’s possible that you may grow to love it because of its sentimental status, or be able to create a look that’s more “you” with a wedding band (for instance, if the ring is simple, a sparkling eternity band can amp up the bling factor).
Exchange it (or sell it)
If you seriously can’t stand it, gently ask if he would mind if you looked at rings together—but don’t forget to reiterate that you are thrilled to be engaged to him. You should be able to return it, or exchange it, within a certain time frame (although there may be a re-stocking fee and policies depend upon the particular store). If you can’t return it at all, you can always sell it.
Be aware of the repercussions
Saying anything may open up all kinds of bad feelings between you and your soon-to-be-spouse (only you know how your partner will react), but it may be even worse if his family is involved. If it’s an heirloom ring from his great-great-grandmother, tread very lightly and unless you know how your future in-laws will react, keep the ring and choose a wedding band you love, and wear that after you wed.
