Are You Lonesome Tonight?
I don't think I've made any secret of the fact that I don't get much sleep. I never have been what you'd call a "good" sleeper – I wake easily and frequently, especially since the kids came along and I developed those Mommy Spidey-Senses. I swear to you, one of my kids can't so much as grunt in their sleep without me jumping up out of bed and being halfway to the door before I realize what I did. As they've gotten older, this has toned down a few degrees (thank goodness), but lately my old pal insomnia has been hanging around a bit too often. It's rare that I'm in bed and asleep before 2am, and I'm up a few times after that and finding it tough to get back to sleep. I think I may have figured out part of the why.
It turns out that loneliness can make it hard for you to get deep, restful sleep. In a study conducted by the journalSleep, researchers found a link between perceived loneliness and sleep disruptions.
People who feel lonely tend to experience more nighttime restlessness and disruptions than their better-adjusted peers, the study found, which may partly explain why loneliness has been associated with health problems such as high blood pressure, heart disease, and depression, says lead researcher Lianne Kurina, Ph.D., an assistant professor of epidemiology at the University of Chicago.
It makes sense to me. I've been feeling acutely lonely lately. I don't know if it's because we're moving into the holiday season, or if my wounded heart is finally healing enough to want to let someone back in, but I'm definitely feeling it. I miss having an arm around me. I miss waking in the night and having someone to roll over and snuggle into. I miss adult conversation across the dinner table. I miss all that stuff, and a lot of stuff that I can't write about in a family-oriented magazine blog, if you know what I mean.
