All about the sign "Spikes" on the car: the rules of traffic rules, the size of GOST 2017, fines

Rules of the road include the sign "Spikes" in the category of vehicle identification signs. Made in the standard for most warning signs format, the “Spikes” sign is placed directly on the car in order to warn other road users of the presence of studded tires on the vehicle.

Do I have to install the sign “Spikes”? Who and when should install the warning sign “Spikes” on a car? What should it be according to GOST? Where to glue the sign "Spikes" on a vehicle in order to avoid a penalty - in which place and on which side? Let's figure it out!

The reasons for the mandatory placement of the sign "Spikes" on the car

Automotive rubber with spikes is designed to make safer driving on ice or rolled snow, while steel rods built into the tread significantly increase the grip properties of the tire with an icy or snow-covered road surface.

On the other hand, in other conditions, studded tires can be a dangerous factor indirectly capable of causing an accident. For example, a car with such tires has a shorter stopping distance, which is useful for the driver to know when driving.

In addition, rubber with high grip properties on the road with small gravel becomes the reason for the stones to fall out from under the wheels. The latter can damage the car body, following this car in heavy traffic. The spikes themselves carry the same danger: when subjected to high loads, studded wheels often lose these metal rods, which also fly out from under the wheels at very high speeds.

In this regard, a car marked with a "Thorns" sign will be less dangerous for other vehicles in the vicinity, as their owners will be warned about possible consequences.

Such a conclusion was made by the experts, who initiated the release of amendments to the regulations governing the operation of studded tires.

Sign "Spikes" on the car: what they say Rules of the Road

Directly on the need to place a traffic warning sign on the vehicle “Spikes” is not indicated, but this duty is based on the requirements of clause 2.3.1 of the Traffic Regulations, according to which any vehicle in use must meet the requirements specified in the Basic Provisions on the admission of vehicles to participate in road movement.

According to the Decree of the Government of the Russian Federation No. 333 of March 24, 2017, from April 2017, the list of these provisions was supplemented with item No. 8, obliging car owners equipped with studded tires to place the “Spikes” sign on their cars. Among the requirements is not only its availability, but also the compliance of the designation with the state standard (GOST), as well as the rules for placing the mark, which are specified in the same clause 8 of the Basic Provisions.

What should be the sign of "Spikes" in accordance with GOST 2017: size and appearance

A format has been developed for warning road signs in traffic regulations, which is designed to make them more visible to road users. A white triangle with a bright red border is great for attracting attention, so the developers of the state standard made the following requirements for the decoration of the sign "Spikes":

  • the shape is an equilateral white triangle;
  • the presence of a red border;
  • the presence of a black letter "W" on a white background.

The size of the sign "Thorns":the minimum allowable size of the “Spikes” mark in accordance with GOST is 20 cm. This is exactly how much the length of a side of a triangle should be, according to experts, so that the sign is clearly visible. The standard also establishes requirements for the width of the border - 1/10 of the length of the side of the triangle, i.e., at a sign size of 20 cm, the width of the red border should be 2 cm.

According to GOST, any suitable material, including paper or plastic, can be taken as the basis for the image of the “Spikes” sign. This means that the designation required can be drawn on plain or self-adhesive paper to subsequently place a sign on the car. Other methods of fastening are allowed, including special suction cups, which are optimal for fixing marks made of plastic.

Where to glue the sign “Spikes” according to GOST - to which place and which side

Clause 8 of the “Basic Provisions for the Admission of the Vehicle to Participation in Road Traffic” prescribes to place the “Spikes” sign behind the vehicle. The legislators do not indicate a more precise wording, therefore, car owners are actually invited to choose the place for fixing the symbol themselves.

The rear part of the vehicle is represented by the rear window, tailgate and bumper surfaces, therefore, the “Thorns” sign must be located within these body elements. What is preferred to make the designation more noticeable?

A conscientious driver will definitely try to place the warning sign “Spikes” in such a way that it always remains visible to other road users.

Here it is necessary to take into account not only the size of the sign that is sufficient for identification, but also its location: the bumper and trunk surface will not be the best choice because they are often covered with a layer of road dirt that completely overlaps the pasted designation.

The best option is the rear window, which is less polluted and behind which you can hide a paper sign that is afraid of moisture.

Thus, the question of where the “Spikes” sign should be glued according to GOST is not entirely correct: the state standard only sets the requirements for the size and appearance of the warning symbol, while its placement can be any surface of the rear part of the car (in accordance with the standards "The main provisions for the admission of the vehicle to participate in road traffic").

Penalties for driving a car without a sign "Spikes"

The necessity of establishing the “Spikes” sign on a car with studded tires is indicated not only by the Basic Provisions on the admission of vehicles to participate in road traffic, but also by the content of Part 1 of Article 12.5 of the Administrative Code. According to the amendments, from April 2017, the traffic police inspector is entitled to fine car owners who operate vehicles equipped with studs with spikes and not having a corresponding spikes warning sign. The article assumes punishment in the formwarnings ora fine of 500 rubles, and the decision about what kind of punishment the offender will be subjected to remains with the inspector.

Important!If you did not manage to get rid of the warning, remember the possibility that violators are given by the Federal Law No. 437-ФЗ that came into force in 2016. We are talking about a 50 percent discount on fines for bona fide payers: if payment is made within 20 days after the ruling, the amount of the fine is halved. Non-observance of paragraph 2.3.1 of the Road Traffic Regulations is included in the list of violations for which such a discount is allowed, therefore, in the absence of the “Spikes” sign, the driver can expect a fine of 250 rubles.

Remember that you can always get away with trouble and save money, time and nerves if you take care of putting your vehicle in proper condition in advance. Purchase or make yourself a sign “Spikes”, install it on your car and safely move along the roads without the risk of being fined!

Using studded tires abroad

Many of those who often make automobile trips abroad, have to study the peculiarities of traffic rules of those countries that they visit. Europe is famous for the good quality of its roads, but few know that in most European countries the exploitation of tires is prohibited by law.Local authorities consider them to be the cause of premature destruction of the roadway, so they strictly monitor the observance of the ban set for fans of studded rubber.

The exception is the Scandinavian states, known for their harsh climate. In Finland, tires with spikes are allowed, but they can be used only in a strictly designated period - from November 1 to March 31. Similar rules apply in Norway and Sweden and other northern European countries. At the same time, there are often additional requirements for the design of such tires: for example, in Finland, 13-inch tires for passenger cars cannot have more than 90 spikes. In addition, these spikes cannot protrude beyond the tread line by more than 1.2 mm.

Overturned rubber is banned in Germany, the Netherlands, Portugal, Poland, Romania, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Bulgaria, Serbia, Macedonia, Croatia, Slovenia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro and Turkey. Spiked tires are allowed in Albania, Andorra, Belarus, Armenia, Great Britain, Greece, Georgia, Denmark, Ireland, Iceland, Norway, Spain, Ukraine, France, Sweden, Estonia.

In a number of European countries, a legal alternative to stud tires is made up of winter tires with special snow chains.
